Powerline Technician Apprenticeship Program Starts 2021 on a High Note
January 20, 2021Southeast College welcomed its first cohort of in class students to its Powerline Technician Training facility in early January. The students started their Level Two Apprenticeship training in October 2020 with the online portion of their program and finished their two weeks of in class practical studies on January 15, 2021.
“The feedback we have received from this cohort of students has been nothing short of tremendous. The students appreciated the flexibility of the online classroom portal that was used and were able to apply the practical knowledge they learned in the training facility,” states Jody Holzmiller, VP Education and Training. “Not only has this program had a positive impact for Southeast College but for the City of Weyburn itself. Most students temporarily relocate to Weyburn for their in-class portion and that results in extra revenue for hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc. It truly is a win-win for all of us.”
Over the course of the 2020-2021 academic year, Southeast College will train 110 Powerline Technician Apprentices in 11 different classes. The projection for the 2021-2022 academic year is 160 students in 16 classes.
“The Powerline Technician Apprenticeship program has allowed Weyburn to be put on the map with respect to the quality of education that is provided as an extension of the Southeast College Campus. Weyburn businesses will see a significant positive impact due to students requiring accommodations, meals and other services while they study in our community,” states Weyburn Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Twila Walkeden. “The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be partnered with the College in many aspects, but this one stands out as a highlight.”
Southeast College is proud to be the Trainer of Choice in Southeast Saskatchewan. The College offers innovative and flexible programming that encourages students to learn where they live.
