Program Overview

Mental Heath and Addictions workers are a vital part of the health care team. Graduates from the Mental Health and Addictions Counselling Diploma program will bring their new knowledge in the specialty to communities across the province and be able to confidently assist with the growing addictions crisis.

NOTE:

  • Clinical placements for the Continuing Care Assistant program may take place outside of the city/town where your program takes place. 
  • Students that miss mandatory labs and/or clinical placements due to any reason other than illness, will be subject to retake applicable labs/clinicals at their own cost to be eligible for course completion/graduation; the cost will be determined by the program coordinator.

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 12 with English Language Arts A30 and English Language Arts B30
  • English Language Requirement (one of the below)
    • Waived if applicant completed grades 10, 11, and 12 English, in sequence, as part of three full academic years in a high school using provincially accredited Canadian or state-accredited U.S. curriculum with a minimum grade of 70% in English Language Arts A30 and English Language Arts B30, or equivalent.
    • Waived if applicant completed a minimum of two years from an accredited post-secondary program at a recognized institution or a combination of accredited programs where English is the official language of instruction and examination with a grade point average of 60% or equivalent.
    • IELTS Academic overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 7.0 in each band.
    • TOEFL overall score of 94-101 with a minimum score of 23 in Speaking, a minimum score of 24 in each of Listening and Reading, and a minimum score of 27 in Writing.
    • Duolingo English Test minimum overall score of 135.
  • Current certification in the following must be provided prior to starting semester 2 of the program:
    • Transferring Lifting Repositioning (TLR®)
    • Advanced Professional Assault Response Training (PART)
    • Standard First Aid
    • Basic Life Support Provider (formerly CPR Health Care Provider ‘C’ AED) or equivalent
    • 2015 WHMIS Globally Harmonized System (GHS) certification. Recertification will be required every three years to remain current.
  • Accepted applicants are required to provide evidence of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search prior to commencement of the program.
  • Accepted applicants are required to provide current immunization records.
